Summary: Ben’s not the same person he was when Sam and Dean disappeared into Purgatory three years ago, but with the help of an angel’s ex-vessel and a particularly stubborn cambion, Ben has achieved the impossible and released them from their self-inflicted prison. Between teaching Jesse to control his new demonic powers and trying, as ever, to earn Claire’s trust, Ben’s ready to call the job well done and finally live a life that doesn’t revolve around Dean. But now the word’s out that the Winchesters are back in business, an old enemy with a bone to pick aims to put them down permanently. When the hunt jeopardizes the aunt Ben turned his back on three years ago, Ben, Claire, and Jesse join the Winchesters in striking back—and that means rising tension between Ben’s new half-demon friend and the only man he could ever call father. It’s hard to feel anything but ordinary next to Claire’s little piece of Castiel and Jesse’s half-demon heritage, but how Ben balances his new life and the one he left behind will make all the difference in who makes it out of the fight the way they went in.
Notes: This is a sequel to last year’s Big Bang entry, Cambion, and part of a larger verse, but no worries! As per the rules, this stands alone just fine, and it’s much shorter, so you may be happier starting here. The cage is closer now, a great pillar of fire that has no beginning and no end. Outside it are what Sam’s mind perceives as as rolling thunderclouds. Small in comparison to the cage, the storm towers over them, the human and the angel in a vessel. Lightning lashes bright and pure against the bars of the cage, sparks flying. The thunder makes the fire shudder.

“What is that?” Dean asks.

“That is me. When I came here before.”

“That’s you?” Dean asks, and Castiel feels himself glow with the sin of pride at the reluctant awe in Dean’s tone.
