Claire hasn’t spoken once since they found Ben’s blood all over the motel room. If Ben could just see this, Jesse thinks, he’d know being in love went both ways after all. But Ben’s not here—and that’s the entire problem. Ben would know just what to say to get her to talk, react, but Jesse’s been trying for six hours now and he still can’t get it right.
“You know, they never show this part in the movies,” he says. “Stakeouts are all montages and doughnuts. Sex scenes,” he adds suggestively, hoping to piss her off.
But Claire doesn’t even throw him a dirty look. Her eyes are trained on the house they’re watching; he has to stare just to catch her blinking.
He lets out a sigh, blowing his hair out of his face. “He’s not dead,” he says. “The ritual doesn’t go down for two more days, they’ll keep him alive until then. This is a good lead, this bitch will lead us straight to the coven.” He pauses. “We’ll find him.”
But Claire doesn’t say a word.
